This prolific artist has been creating music somewhere in one of his mind's murkiest basements for a considerable while now, plus has worked with both Nurse With Wound and Current 93 during the past few years. Otherwise known for much in the way of collaborative work, he has also been caught on releases with many artists, including Colin Potter, Steven Severin, Bass Communion, Brian Poole, David Janssen, Darren Tate, The Hafler Trio, Freida Abtan, Faust, Daniel Padden, Karl Blake, Unsong, Band of Pain, Lord Bath, Maniac, John Murphy, Ernesto Tomasini, Sion Orgon, Andrew King, Scribble 7, Kenji Siratori, Sehnsucht, Cadaverous Condition, Daniel Menche, Annie Kerr, Nick Mott, Paul Bradley, Aaron Moore, Nigel Ayers, Irr. App (Ext), Jonathan Coleclough, Tony Wakeford, Frans De Waard, Freek Kinkelaar, Maja Elliott, Joolie Wood, Danielle Dax, Rose McDowall, Edward Ka-spel, vidnaObmana and Ruse. On his CD release for Fourth Dimension, In My Father's House Are Many Mansions, he is the subject of many remixes by a number of these.

Circle PDF Print E-mail

Finland's finest export have been cooking up some fine music since the early 1990s. Originally backed by the country's very own wonderful Bad Vugum imprint (home to all things underground, outlandish and still entangled in some of the gnarls and knots generated by punk and its deviating into '80s noise culture), the group, spearheaded by founder Jussi Lehtisalo, very rapidly became one of the flagships for an evidently vibrant network of miscreants, misfits and scoundrels all intent on sprinkling the kinda dust on their own musings entirely exclusive to this particular patch of Scandinavia. Circle, initially weaned on a salubrious diet of Can and some of the early '90s UK noise groups, instantly proved themselves to be contenders for singing in their own language (a la Magma and Sigur Ros), employing some of the most hypnotic rhythms around and forever hinting at the spirals of sonic madness that were later to unfurl around them and grip them tighter than ever.

Since then, the group has released almost enough records to fill a shop on all manner of labels from around the world, plus been essentially housed by Jussi's own Ektro label; itself now the home for all things weird 'n' wonderful in Circle's native country besides some other fantastic releases.

One of the very first singles the group recorded away from Bad Vugum during the mid-'90s was 'Ghataraian' for Fourth Dimension. Then, in 2006, FD's relationship with the group was once again forged via the release of the 'Arkades' LP, which documented a radio session for WFMU in the USA, and has subsequently led to a few more releases and, hopefully, others yet to come.

Splintered PDF Print E-mail

Splintered formed in 1989 from the remains of Playground (a noise-guitar-based group that featured Richo, Paul Wright and Paul Dudeney in its line-up). Between then and the band's grinding to a standstill in 1997, the line-up changed and expanded to include, amongst others, Steve Pittis (Band Of Pain, Dirter Promotions, etc.), Colin Bradley (Dual), Stuart Carter (Theme, The Fields Of Hay) and James Hodson (later of Faust), besides the core of Richo, Paul W., Paul D. and guitarist James Machin. The group released several albums, appeared on numerous compilations, released many 7" records, and housed several offshoot projects including Slugbait, A.S.P. and Husk.

Following an eponymous collaborative album on Black Rose Recordings with Germany's RLW and a European tour in 1997, the group simply hit a dead-end and have, over the past few years, been discussing the idea of rekindling some activity in an effort to realise some previously unreleased work and the two sessions they recorded for The John Peel Show. It is hoped that a few new recordings will materialise during 2010.
